The Supreme Court made a landmark ruling that drastically curtailed, if not outright banned, the use of affirmative action in college admissions. The justices decided by a vote of 6-3 that the equal protection clause of the Constitution, which forbids racial discrimination by government agencies, is violated by the admissions procedures utilized by Harvard College and the University of North Carolina.
