CAL POLY U-RISE is a program supported by a grant from the National Institutes for Health (NIH - T34GM149492). It is designed to provide research opportunities to students from underrepresented groups and enable them to develop their identities as scientists. The program directors are currently recruiting students for academic year 2023-2024!
The goal of U-RISE is to increase the diversity of undergraduate students that transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (e.g., Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.)
U-RISE at Cal Poly consists of four key components over a 2-year training program: a) mentoring team, b) research experience, c) course work, and d) events outside classroom (e.g., research seminars, professional development)
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?
- Full time Cal Poly undergraduate students who meet one of the NIH (National Institutes for Health) definitions for underrepresented populations (see attached flyer for more details)
- Students who are commitment to pursuing a PhD or MD/PhD in biomedical field
- Students who have at least two more years in their undergraduate program and a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.5
- Students who are a US Citizen, permanent resident, or non-citizen national
STUDENT BENEFITS
- Tuition assistance (~$7,500/year for two years)
- Annual stipend (~$14,000/year) for completing ~10-15 hours/week of research
