2023 Summer Scholars Program at Ventura County Medical Center 8 Week Program: Tuesday, June 20, 2023, through Friday, August 11, 2023.
We look forward to selecting 5 undergraduate students to participate in this full-time, intensive 8-week internship at the Ventura County Medical Center. Students must be available Monday – Friday for the duration of the program. We are pleased to offer a $3000 stipend to offset the inability to work during this time.
Description
The Summer Scholars Program at VCMC provides undergraduate students considering careers in medicine and other health care professions with an opportunity to work with the faculty and physicians-in-training at the nationally recognized Family Medicine Residency Program at Ventura County Medical Center.
Summer Scholars are placed with faculty preceptors who coordinate opportunities to observe or participate in a variety of patient care settings. Student Scholars attend teaching conferences at the Medical Center, make rounds with medical staff and observe patient interactions and procedures in both inpatient and outpatient settings (e.g., clinic visits, live births, surgeries, emergency room visits, autopsies, etc.) Each Summer Scholar becomes involved in a clinical research or quality improvement project and presents their findings on the last day of the program. A few Summer Scholars have had their work published and/or presented at an annual Family Medicine Research Forum.
Many of our former Scholars cite this experience as a formative one in their pursuit of a career in health care. We have even welcomed graduates of the Scholars program into our residency program here at VCMC! See our website for more information and the online application: www.venturafamilymed.org/students. The application deadline is Friday, March 17, 2023.
