Join us! Genetic Counseling Virtual Career Fair Sept 20 and Oct 6

Aloha Cal Students,

My name is Liann Jimmons and I’m a genetic counselor with the Western States Regional Genetics Network. We are excited to invite your students to join us at our third annual Genetic Counseling Career Fair (virtual) on September 20th and October 6th. (September 20 at 9 AM – 12 PM Pacific/12 PM – 3 PM Eastern; October 6 11 AM – 2 PM Pacific/2 PM – 5 PM Eastern)

This career fair will provide an opportunity for students and individuals of all ages to connect with over 50 Master’s Level genetic counseling training programs across the continent. Interested students and professionals can ask program leaders directly what their career path looks like and find their best fit and set themselves up for success when applying in the future.

Some quick pros about careers in genetic counseling:

  • Programs can be completed in 2-3 yrs

  • Average starting salary of $78k (US)

  • Average salary overall $102k (US)

  • Variety of practice areas (patient care, education, research, etc.)

  • 100% job growth rate in last 10 yrs

  • 100% job growth rate predicted in next 10 yrs

Interested individuals can register to attend for either or both days at: https://bit.ly/gcfair22

The fair is co-hosted by the Minority Genetic Professionals Network (MGPN). They will have a virtual booth for prospective students to connect with a room of current genetic counseling students and practicing genetic counselors of minoritized backgrounds. Increasing diversity and representation in the genetics field will lead to safer, more inclusive, and more accessible genetics health services. MGPN supports the next generation of genetics professionals with a commitment to the principle of “for us, by us.”

As a dedicated MSI, we would greatly appreciate your help in spreading the word about this event throughout your school’s diverse student networks. Career counselors, academic advisors, educators please share through your student listservs, bulletins, and classes, especially with students who are interested in careers in health care or who enjoy studying life and behavioral sciences.

Genetic counseling is a dynamic healthcare field that marries the interests of those interested in serving patients and communities, and those interested in cutting edge science and research. College students and graduates who haven’t found their fit in traditional pre-health studies or wet labs may find the balance they’re looking for in genetic counseling!

We have created a Social Media Toolkit for you to easily share info about the career fair. The toolkit includes example email templates, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter posts, accompanying graphics/flyers of appropriate size for each, different time zones, and versions of each graphic/post focused on recruitment within diverse populations (these are labeled as ‘MGPN Versions’). Click here for the full toolkit.*

If you need any alternate versions of the graphics found within the toolkit, please contact lila@hawaiigenetics.org for assistance.

Please reach out to me with any questions. We are passionate about this lesser known but amazing health care field and would love to help bring new opportunities to your students.

Mahalo,

Liann
