| The Dos- Research the schools you are most interested in connecting with. Check out their individual websites or use the Medical School Admissions Requirements™ (MSAR®) website.
- Review the agenda ahead of time so you can plan your day.
- Add your picture to your fair profile.
- Use full sentences as you chat, avoid slang and emoticons, and watch your spelling.
- Be prepared to talk about your medical school aspirations, as well as your academic, lab, volunteer, or leadership experiences to demonstrate your skills and competencies.
- Review your social media accounts. Some schools may search for applicants online and on social media platforms, so be sure all your accounts are professional, up-to-date, and private.
- Login and test your connection to make sure you can hear, see, and communicate easily. A laptop or desktop might work better than a tablet or smartphone. Also, be sure you have access to reliable WiFi if you are not at home.
| | | The Don'ts
- Don’t use a nickname or clever screenname. School representatives may want to reach out to you after the fair and this may make it challenging to find you (or may lead them to question your professionalism).
- Don’t be impatient and leave a chat or repeat a question if the medical school staffer does not respond right away. Remember that they may have multiple chats going on simultaneously.
- Don’t ask the same question (privately) to multiple staff members in the same booth. Often, they’ll be communicating or in the room with other representatives and will know you’ve also asked the others, too.
- Don’t address representatives by their first name. Use the appropriate salutation (Dr., Mr., or Ms, etc.,) and their last name.
- Don’t forget to thank the person you are chatting with for their time.
