CFHI Webinars, Programs, Scholarships, and More!

April 2022

Greetings!

I am excited to share that CFHI has been selected as a finalist for the 2022 GoAbroad Innovation Awards in the Innovative New Program - Study Abroad category. This nomination recognizes the CFHI Virtual Global Health Elective which was launched in 2021 in response to restrictions on international travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Virtual Elective is a unique, innovative program that provides advanced clinical students with the opportunity to build Global Health competencies through seminars and roundtables featuring an expert global leadership faculty. Topics covered include low-resource and interdisciplinary clinical reasoning, global health ethics, planetary health, case study work, and much more. In addition, participants enjoy the truly global nature of the virtual space students in the Virtual Elective have come from 20 different countries so far! It's an honor to have the work of the CFHI global team recognized in this way.

In this month's newsletter, we'll continue to celebrate CFHI's 30th anniversary through alumni reflections; we'll offer a myriad of opportunities to engage in global health education including new scholarship deadlines and webinars; and we'll share highlights from recent conferences and much more!

With gratitude,

Robin Young, MBA

Reflections on CFHI's 30th Anniversary

CFHI Alumni Advisory Board Chair Dr. Gary Kirkilas

It's funny how you never know just how much a single person, organization, place, or experience might influence your life. For me, my four-week trip to Oaxaca, Mexico in April 2005 was the experience that set in motion a life serving the medically underserved. During those four weeks I witnessed the full spectrum of the human experience: the tragic loss of life, the happy welcoming of a new tiny human, the frustrating political turmoil and civil unrest, the delightful exploration of culinary delights that only Oaxaca offers. I took these experiences and fashioned a career that would allow me to serve patients of the greatest need. I now work as a general pediatrician on a mobile medical unit that exclusively serves Phoenix’s homeless children and teens. Everyday I use valuable skills that CFHI instilled in me: cultural humility, equity and equality, and, most importantly, respect for the human condition. In addition, I serve as a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics where I can use my voice to be the voice of the most vulnerable. Lastly, I am active politically, lobbying for the best interests of our society’s most valuable assets: children and families. I am forever grateful for what CFHI offered and continues to offer to each successful generation of student-learners.

Sincerely,

Gary Kirkilas, DO

Alumni Advisory Board Chair

CFHI Alumni Spotlight

Ignatius Asasira is an alum of the Virtual Global & Public Health Internship - India and a 5th-year medical student from Uganda.

Ignatius shares, "I've always dreamt of becoming a global health specialist and CFHI did exactly what I needed in these times. Doing a virtual internship with emphasis on India opened my mind to identifying as a global citizen. I realized we share a lot of challenges with many countries out there and that gave me a challenge to imagine that my practice as a doctor shall benefit every human being that comes to me. Spending hours online to share knowledge and experience with my colleagues across borders was worth it. I look forward to sharing my experience with other students in Uganda who dream of achieving big things."

CFHI Global Team Spotlight

This month, we are spotlighting Renzo Guinto, MD, DrPH. Dr. Guinto is faculty of the CFHI Virtual Global Health Elective and a part of CFHI's Advisory Circle. He also recently delivered an address at the WHO Western Pacific Regional Office, highlighting the crucial nature of Planetary Health on World Health Day.

Dr. Guinto shares, "The COVID-19 pandemic is a stark reminder of humanity’s inextricable link with nature – how we relate with the planet shapes our health in return. Unfortunately, we human beings are also grappling with other parallel health challenges that are driven by broader ecological crises, such as climate change, plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, among others. Hence, there is a need to expand our global public health approach, which tends to focus on the health of people, to include a deep concern for the health of the planet. That is why for CFHI’s Virtual Global Health Elective, we introduced a pioneering series on planetary health, which has allowed medical students to learn about this new powerful concept, become familiar with some of the most pressing planetary health challenges of our time, and appreciate their crucial role in creating a healthy people living on a healthy planet. To produce a new generation of planetary-health oriented doctors and health professionals, planetary health knowledge and principles must be integrated into the future of medical education."

CFHI Program Spotlight

On April 14th CFHI's Medical and Country Directors from Bolivia, India, The Philippines, and Uganda gathered for a Virtual Global Health Roundtable as a part of the Medical University of Southern Carolina's (MUSC's) Global Health Week to discuss the important topic of Global Health Equity.

Speaking from their diverse areas of expertise, experience, and perspectives, each speaker discussed the topic of equity within their country, and strategies being implemented in each of their unique settings to work toward health equity. Innovative ideas were shared, tailored to the needs of each context, allowing for a comprehensive overview. It was CFHI's pleasure to welcome students and faculty from MUSC in the audience, along with other CFHI virtual participants, in this interactive session.

If you are interested in organizing a Virtual Global Health Roundtable for your students and faculty, please connect with Carolina Bolaños Palmieri, Director of Programs & Safety, for more information.
