USC Keck School of Medicine Summer Program: Journey for Underrepresented Minority Pre-Med Scholars (JUMPS)

USC Keck School of Medicine is offering virtual summer programs for underrepresented minority pre-med scholars! These are one-hour presentations relevant topics and are followed by smaller breakout rooms where the medical student facilitators will be able to answer the attendees’ questions and provide mentorship.

Topics include:
  • Required pre-medicine courses and helpful study tactics
  • Common extracurricular activities of successful applicants (shadowing physicians, volunteering, clinical experiences, etc.)
  • How to find research experiences as an undergraduate student
  • Building relationships with professors and obtaining letters of recommendation
All JUMPS sessions will take place weekly on Saturdays in July from 10am-12pm.
  • July 10th: Introduction to Pre-Med: What types of classes are required? Can you pick any major? What are some helpful study tips? What do you do if you receive a poor grade?
  • July 17th: All About Extracurriculars: How do you participate in community service? Is it possible to have a job while being pre-med? How important are leadership positions? How do you obtain letters of recommendation?
  • July 24th: All About Research: What are the different types of research? How do you email doctors about their research? How do you make a CV/resume?
  • July 31st: All About Admissions: What is the application process like? When should you apply? How much will it cost, and how can you pay for it? How do you write a personal statement?
Here is the link to sign up for the program! While what is deemed underrepresented is continuously changing, they aim to predominantly reach Black, Latinx, Native American/Indigenous, Pacific Islander, and Southeast Asian (Vietnamese, Cambodian, Indonesian, and Laotian) students.
