Black Men in White Coats Documentary & Discussion

We are pleased to announce this important and exciting event hosted by the College of Science and Math Student Services and Pre-Health Professions Advising, along with support from the CSM Committee for Inclusion and Equity! On May 22-May 26, we will be hosting a viewing of the documentary Black Men in White Coats (click here to watch the trailer), with a panel discussion to follow on the evening of May 26.

To watch the documentary, participants must register an email address to receive a link to watch on one of the selected dates: May 22-25 or May 25-26.

The panel discussion on Wednesday, May 26 from 6-7:30pm will include the following panelists, who will discuss the systemic barriers they faced in medicine and their thoughts on how to make the field of healthcare more inclusive and equitable moving forward:

  • Dr. Joye Carter, forensic pathologist for San Luis Obispo County and the first African American to be appointed as a chief medical examiner
  • Anthony Kilgore, Cal Poly alumnus and current medical student at the Mayo Clinic
  • Dr. Joel Lopes, chief of the Department of Anesthesiology at Colquitt Regional Medical Center

This opportunity is especially relevant to all students who are pre-med and/or pre-health. More information can be found below, in the attached flyer, as well as on our website

Why is this event so important? From the film producers, “fewer Black men applied to medical school in 2014 than in 1978. Only two percent of American doctors are Black men, and Black men have the lowest life expectancy in the United States. Why is it easier to visualize a Black man in an orange jumpsuit than it is in a white coat? What if we had a medical workforce that reflected our patient population? This documentary dissects the systemic barriers preventing Black men from becoming medical doctors and the consequences to society at large. It’s time to end this crisis and get more Black men in white coats!”
