Volunteer Opportunities: Open Work Hours and Volunteer Positions in SLO

Check out these four local groups that are offering open work hours for community members to volunteer! All opportunities are outside with proper COVID precautions in place.

City of SLO Community Garden Workdays

  • Volunteer with the City of San Luis Obispo at Emerson Community Garden!Duties include weeding, watering, and pruning. Bring your mask, sunscreen, and closed-toed shoes and you're all set!

SLO Botanical Garden
  • Volunteer with the SLO Botanical Garden during their open work hours on Wednesdays 9 am-12 pm and Thursdays 10 am-12 pm. Volunteering will consist of garden maintenance and other related tasks.

City Farm SLO
  • Volunteer outdoors in the garden with City Farm SLO during their open work hours from 9 am-12 pm on Sundays!

Growing Grounds
  • Volunteer at Growing Grounds, a local nonprofit plant nursery run by Transitions Mental Health Association! No need to fill out an application, just show up! Masks and social distancing are required. 
  • What: Help is needed with weeding and watering plants, and other gardening tasks.
  • When: every Tuesday through Friday, 9 am to 1 pm. This is an ongoing opportunity!

El Camino Homeless Organization
Position Description: At least two volunteers must stay overnight with the guests as chaperones to help supervise the evening. The shift is 5:00 pm-7:00 am. Upon arrival you will go through training with an experienced volunteer. Chaperones take turns taking sleeping shifts during the night, with one chaperone awake at all times. Start time can be flexible if you need to come in later. You can start as late as 9:00pm and can leave as early as 5:00am if needed- just let ECHO know in advance so they can be prepared.

Wilshire Community Services
This group serves senior citizens in SLO. They currently have several volunteer positions open:
  • Drivers to assist clients to/from doctor appointments (Wilshire will reimburse a $25 gas card for every 100 miles driven)
  • Shoppers for groceries and prescriptions (calendar changes weekly depending on client’s needs. Client will reimburse the volunteer with a personal check or cash when items are delivered)
  • Friendly porch visits or phone visits with isolated seniors (1 hour/week)
  • Riso Family Medical Loan Closet associate (Open M-W-F, 10am-2pm)
