COMS 422 - Rhetorics of Science, Technology, and Medicine, looks at communication about technical topics aimed at public (i.e. non-technical) audiences. Students will be looking at media coverage of medical news and research, depictions of scientists in the media, the influence of science fiction on public attitudes about technology and science, and patient experiences in the health care system. This course will be offered in a combination of synchronous and asynchronous components during the Fall Quarter 2020, with the class meeting on Thursdays from 9 - 11 am.

According to the instructor, students in this course will spend most of their time discussing and analyzing all the communications we are encountering around COVID-19, so the content will be very relevant.

Students are encouraged to bring in their own personal and professional interests - the final project is to apply what they've learned to create some type of communication for a STEM topic of their choice.

Please note that this is not a GE course, so if you don't have any free electives you may need to speak with your academic advisor about potentially taking this course as an approved elective. This course is only available to students with Junior standing, and who have completed GE Area A with grades of C- or better.
