Eligibility Criteria:
- Undergraduate Cal Poly student (graduating no earlier than winter 2021, ability to work through June 2021)
- Upper-division, third or fourth year standing (by start of fall 2020)
- Minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA
- Must have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a health profession career
- Be available to work approximately 8-10 hours per week
- One year commitment (September ‘20-June ‘21)
- Students eligible for Federal Work Study are strongly encouraged to apply
Peer Advisor Job Description:
- Provide pre-health students with current and accurate information on various academic and career opportunities through one-on-one advising and through group advising workshops.
- Provide information to students on required prerequisite coursework, entrance exams, application process for various health professions.
- Assist pre-health students with creating a health profession timeline. This includes but is not limited to: when to take their prerequisite courses, entrance exams and when to apply to their program. Also, it includes incorporating when and how often to complete community service, leadership and health-related activities that will be needed to be a competitive applicant when applying to a health professions program.
- Plan and deliver presentations on health profession topics during club meetings, in first year classes and in residence halls as requested.
- Update and maintain the pre-health blog.
- Provide reception and front desk services to students.
- Independently research health career information on the web. Bookmark informative sites and share web based resources with students.
- Maintain health profession bulletin boards & PolyLearn site.
- Update health professions spreadsheets/binders/handouts and assist with on-going health professions projects as requested.
- Maintain a strong overall awareness of campus resources and new student issues.
- Refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed.
Additional Responsibilities/Skills Required:
- Ability to take initiative, follow through with tasks and work well with minimum supervision.
- Ability to communicate effectively and be sensitive to students from varied cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff and faculty as a team player.
- Occasional evening/weekend hours will be required when giving presentations.
- Must be available training in early September as well as WOW (tentatively September 1-16, 2020).
