Health Profession Highlight: Podiatry

This week is the annual Health Professions Week! See this post for more information on what they offer and how to sign up. For each day of the week, we will be highlighting a specific career that are not as well known but could be a great fit!

Today's highlight career is podiatry.

Job description: A podiatrist is a foot and ankle physician or surgeon. They are qualified to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg. Podiatrists can work in a variety of setting including private practice, clinics, and hospitals and can specialize in many areas. Specialties include sports medicine, diabetic wound care, dermatology, radiology, and surgery!

Prerequisites/ Education required: Because podiatrists are a type of physician, their education looks very similar to medical school! The prerequisites consist of biology, chemistry, and physics (see our website for specifics) The MCAT is also required. Podiatry school is 4 years, with the first two years consisting of classroom instruction in the basic medical sciences. The second two years are heavily based on clinical rotations. The process ends with a residency in a specific specialty.

Job outlook: According to explorehealthcareers.org, the average salary is $190,675 and the job outlook is excellent! Overall, this career is a great opportunity to practice as a fully licensed physician, without taking the traditional medical school route!
