Health Profession Highlight: Audiology

This week is the annual Health Professions Week! See this post for more information on what they offer and how to sign up. Here is our second highlighted profession.

Today's highlight career is audiology.

Job description: An audiologist is a doctor who specializes in the areas of hearing and balance-related disorders. They often work as part of an interdisciplinary care team, and they focus on preventing hearing loss, identifying hearing/balance problems, and rehabilitating patients who have suffered from one or more of these problems. 

Prerequisites/ Education required: An audiologist must earn an AuD (Doctor of Audiology) from an accredited program--you can browse a list of accredited schools here. The programs are 3-4 years long and require a bachelor's degree. The GRE is also required, and course prerequisites consist of biology, humanities, chemistry, and physics (each school has specific prerequisites highlighted on their website!). 

Job outlook: According to explorehealthcareers.org, the average salary for an audiologist is $61,000 to $96,000, and the job outlook is excellent! Overall, this career offers a variety of work settings and career specialties while focusing on individualized care.
